As previously mentioned, I’m outlining ideas that I’d like to pursue if I can gather the proper collaborators — let me know if you or someone you know might be interested! Here’s project #2.

Investors??? Possibly you!!!

Project 2: Lord of the Rings Themed Trip

I’m looking for a group of individuals (8 people + me) to embark on a real life journey to Mordor for the lulz.

I’m not attached to any parameters for the trip, as long as it feels substantial and roughly in the spirit of the journey in Lord of the Rings. Some ideas:

  • According to this, the journey took about 6 months, over 1800 miles
  • I think the Gates of Hell in Turkmenistan would be a worthy IRL Mount Doom for us to journey to, the political climate there is appropriately suss, though I’m open to suggestions
  • I’m imagining we start somewhere Shire like, probably in Europe, maybe Wales. Wales to Turkmenistan is 3000 miles 🤷‍♂️
  • We travel by foot or horse, just like in the book (though I’d like to throw hitchhiking in there because it’s the best and in the right spirit IMO, maybe justifies the longer distance)
  • We mostly rough it accommodation wise as well, in the spirit of the books
  • I imagine the fellowship would split up and rejoin fluidly as they do in the novels
  • At the end we fly to New Zealand AKA the OG shire to celebrate the completion of our heroic quest.

I’m not actually even that big of a Lord of the Rings fan, but I was inspired by distinctly feeling like a hobbit during my trip in Chile, you can read about it here.

You might be a good collaborator for this journey if the following describes you:

  1. On a “similar wavelength” travel wise
  2. Comfort with high degree of uncertainty
  3. Can handle unfamiliar situations with confidence and grace
  4. Comfort with roughing it, transportation and accommodation wise
  5. Sense of adventure/spontaneity, inclination towards fucking around and finding out
  6. Good barometer might be my journal entries on Chile — if those days sound too intense then probably not a good fit
  7. Have time to spare, I’d feel best about having at least a years worth of slack time, so the trip has space to unfold
  8. You find the idea as amusing as I do

Having said all of this, if you or someone you know are interested in joining the fellowship in its quest to Mordor, please reach out!!!
